Re: Draft

During the Vietnam War, when Cheney was draft-eligible, he received deferments as a student, and then as a registrant with a child.

“I had other priorities in the ’60s than military service,” Cheney told a reporter in 1989, according to the Washington Post. However, in his Senate confirmation hearing, Cheney said he “would have been obviously happy to serve had I been called.”

This quote is obviously intended as some kind of a shot at Cheney. Not sure exactly what, though.

So who didn't have other preferences during the Vietnam War? Weren't his deferments legitimate? And where were all the liberals sniping at Cheney about dodging military service when Clinton was in office?

Is the idea to show that somehow Cheney is antimilitary or unpatriotic? Wouldn't this require the Left to show that the Vietnam War was an essential war in our national interest and for the defense of our nation? Instead of a useless and unnecessary military action, which is what they are trying to paint Iraq as?

Is the idea to show that sending troops into battle when one does not have a military background is somehow wrong? Again, where were these people when Clinton was deploying troops all over the planet?

I have never supported a draft and never will. I would have gone if I had been called, but I would still not have agreed with the principle of involuntary servitude, which is no more legitimate for a State than for an individual.
