<When will we see a Palestinian or Israeli youth embark upon a mission to bring the youth of both sides together in peace?
Two thoughts:
*The Hebrew University bombing killed students who were devoted to the ideal of peace in Palestine and Israel. This process has already begun. The trouble is, those most devoted to it are most at risk for being killed in its pursuit.
*Bringing youth together in an atmosphere of extreme violence and mutual hatred is not a job for the kids themselves but for the adults. Adults working across those barriers to construct a program to educate and protect the children participating sets a moral example that youth finds irresistable.
The programs bringing youth of opposite sides of an armed conflict together to discover their mutual humanity with the highest rates of success (I'm thinking of the Protestant and Catholic Irish youth specifically, but there are probably more) bring the two sides together in a third location, so that neither side has home-ground advantage. Do I hear any nations volunteering? They'd need security like Salt Lake City had for the Olympics.
It really does work, but it's a long-term kind of thing, like growing olive trees. And the kids have to go home and live to grow up.
