Re: One thing I've never understood:

Although we have no evidence of what things were like prior to the Big Bang, our best science was that the laws of physics as you describe them didn't arise until a very short, but finite, time AFTER the Big Bang. So as best as science can tell, the "basic and simple" laws of physics have not "always existed". They are younger than creation. In fact, there was a time before the 4 forces separated, and before subatomic particles formed.

That's why the very idea of a Big Bang was resisted so much by physics. The logical, common sense conclusion is that the Universe has always existed, in more or less its present state, for ever, and it will continue to exist in this state, forever: the Steady State Universe. It involves the least number of assumptions and initial conditions.

The Steady State embodies the Perfect Cosmological Principle: things have always been the same, and will always be the same, no matter when, or where, you look.

But we now know that to be false, from several different and independent lines of evidence. The universe is not only finite in age and size, but it is evolving, and it will end. And this wasn't known for certain when I was a freshman astronomy student. That's not that long ago.

Actually, that's stranger to me than an eternal omnipotent intelligence. The whole idea of "creation" strikes me as voodoo, but that's where the data leads us.
