Canada has something of a history of this. The military has come to the aid of law enforcement agencies at least twice in recent times. The latest was during the "Oka crisis," a violent territorial dispute between the province of Quebec and an Aboriginal nation.
Canadians call it an "aid to the civil power," and it's not turned Canada into the Great Nazi North.
