Ballistic fingerprinting

Haven't noticed much on this subject here, although it seems to be the Cause of the Day elsewhere. Maybe most people realize how ludicrous it is to assume such methods would assist in locating criminals, particularly if they were organized terrorists. Obviously imported guns would not have their files on record. And believe me, there will be imported guns.

And if a gun is stolen? How will tracking it to the original buyer prove anything except that the criminal...or someone he bought the gun from...was once in the area?

On the other hand, if the actual purpose of such legislation was to solidly nail down information on every legitimate citizen who owned a gun, the proposal would work quite well.

A lot of people are saying that "fingerprinting" every gun would help solve crimes. So would fingerprinting every American citizen at birth, and keeping it in a central computer file. Think that's a good idea?
