What people here seem to ignore is that the California energy crisis persisted until Jeffords went Independent, and the Senate Dems could investigate.
They found the price fixing, started stirring up things, and the schemes collapsed, taking with h Enron.
Up until then GWB was saying that there was a lack of production facilities, "designer" gas was taking up too much refinery capacity, there wasn't the distribution grids to get natural gas or electricity to where it was needed, and the high prices were for the "foreseeable future".
And then the Dems investigated. Prices came way, way down, supply went way, way up.
And the conservatives ignored all this, as you so eloquently stated it. Except to say that it wasn't a free market situation, wasn't greed. As may be best.

Might be a bit more to it, too.
