When discharged, you keep the highest award for marksmanship, even though that might fluctuate through a career. After achieving my first expert in 1977, my qualification dropped straight through sharpshooter to marksman like a rock three (3) freakin’ times -- whenever I forgot to take my damned glasses (the birth-control variety) with me to the range.
