On Fox News Channel, a former New York City homicide detective, Jay Salpeter, ventured that Monday's botched efforts to apprehend the shooter may have led to Tuesday's attack since he "lost confidence in the police" and "you do not want to incite him." Salpeter was honest enough to add: "It's my opinion and I could be all wrong."
Shortly after Chief Charles Moose of the Montgomery County police had his lunchtime press conference Tuesday, in the wake of another shooting, the reviews rolled in on MSNBC.
A former FBI agent, Christopher Whitcomb, said the chief's downcast demeanor "reflected a big change in where we were just 24 hours ago ... and tells you an awful lot about where the investigation is." Minutes later, a nervous-looking former New York City police detective, Gil Alba, tepidly opined that Moose was doing a good job under bad conditions.
Alba was followed by a confident criminal profiler, Pat Brown, who said Moose had made a tactical error by positioning himself as the sniper's nemesis. "I think Chief Moose needs to step back," she declared.
