Why the hell is the US supporting the imposition of Islamic Sharia law in Indonesia?!?

US AID spending millions to support review of proposed Sharia laws in Indonesia

Under the woefully misguided illusion that US influence can buy a kinder, gentler form of Islamic law, the US Agency for International Development is supporting, with our tax dollars, the public review of proposed Sharia laws in Indonesia. Someone in Washington appears to be unclear on the concept here. What exactly are we trying to achieve, the creation of a slightly less barbaric set of religious laws for the whole of Indonesian society? Perhaps religious minorities will only suffer some forms of discrimination, not all? Perhaps thieves will only have a hand chopped off, instead of a hand and a foot? Perhaps women daring not to wear the veil in public will only be beaten half as hard by the religious police? Perhaps gays will be mercifully put to death without being tortured first?

This is insane.

The US should obviously reward nations with large Muslim populations that move towards enlightened, secular governance, with fair civil laws for the public domain above the Islamic rules for the private individual. Any form of Sharia, with Koranic law ruling over civil law, is wrong, backwards, and a step back to a primitive past. Sharia also greatly promotes an atmosphere of hostility towards non-Muslims, and has fostered international terrorism in nearly every country it has been instituted. Sharia is evil, plain and simple, and it must be fought at every turn, in every country, on every continent.
