A major investigation into the missing computers began in early August. It led to Air Force Staff Sgt. Sheridan R. Ferrell II being charged in the thefts.

Some of the computers stolen during the summer from the military center coordinating the war in Afghanistan may have been gone almost two months before anyone noticed, the Air Force said.

Four laptop computers were taken from U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base between June 13 and Aug. 9, according to a new statement released by the Air Force Tuesday.

Two were taken from a compound known as a Secure Compartmented Information Facility, where some of the command's most closely guarded secrets are kept. The other laptops also were taken from Central Command, but whether they, too, had been in a secure area was unclear.
