Maybe different colors for different parties (the Green party could be purple -- just to confuse them)? The blocks could be designed to fit only in the prescribed slot of the correct size and shape, and the catch would be limited to accepting only one, or more, depending upon the subject under vote. Then, once the vote is finally cast, the curtain is parted and the blocks drop to bins in the basement to be counted.
Dunno -- still seems like a lot of work...
