Is the price of freedom, freedom itself?

<Big Brother Goes to Washington A privacy expert explains how the government could use a new security law to spy on Americans

It’s beginning to look as if there is no way to protect freedom, that freedom can exist only as long as it is permitted.

The US is giving away, eagerly, by the way, that which makes it a great country. Between this database, and the secret police the new “Homeland Security” department will supply, we are there. And the liberals are trotting along contentedly behind the conservatives who are hell-bent on denying freedoms – except regarding guns.

We all went there eagerly, repeatedly choosing security over freedom, picking the comfort of a barred cave instead of the risk of romping through the meadows.

And the military, the Defense Department, will control the new database. Go figure what they will do with it, why “they” want that information in the military. No civil service procedures there, though.

Can one do more damage "protecting" than the original danger could have done?

Arf (and where's the land of the brave, home of the free)
