Re: Is the price of freedom, freedom itself?

You have some valid concerns here about the tradeoffs between security and freedom. How much freedom are we willing to sacrifice to be "protected?"

But I'm just wondering:

Where were all the freedom-loving liberals over the last fifty years when the government put rigid controls on almost every form of economic activity known to man in order to "protect" consumers and employees? Liberals argue that this economic hyperregulation worked, and people are safer now than they were. Well, "Big Brother" controls will make people safer too. Is that the ultimate goal?

The old saying is that liberals want totalitarian controls over economics, and freedom in the social sphere, while conservatives want the opposite. The truth is more complicated, of course, but it is interesting that no one ever seems concerned that I have to obey like fifty Federal regulations just to hire a guy to lift rocks for me.
