(To borrow a subject line.)
The thrust of the article seemed to be that now the Taliban is gone, it's incumbent upon foreign powers to rebuild the country.
And it adds that rebuilding isn't happening on a meaningful scale.
Prior to the bombing I remember GWB saying, promising, that the US was into Afghanistan for the long haul, and would stay and rebuild the country. We would supply money and expertise. Made you sort of feel good about the bombing. We'd rid them of their oppressors, and help them into the 20th, if not the 21st, century.
After the bombing, when the Taliban was gone, came GWBs speech in Japan. Big, big backpedal - the US threw out the Taliban, it is up to the rest of the world to rebuild the country. Division of labor, and all that. the US will destroy, and it's up to the ROW to come along and pick up the pieces. Fair's fair.
Then like little kids abandoning a broken toy, it's off to Iraq, just leaving leaving enough military presence in Afghanistan to protect a political puppet.
I don't see reported the meaningful reconstruction which the American people were promised and I wish it would happen. I wish the US were as interested in construction as destruction. Besides pipelines, of course.
No wonder the Kurds don't trust the US. You'd have to be sort of dumb if you did.
