Why does it seem everyone wants to claim victim status?

According to this article, Germany's largest daily circulation newspaper is claiming that Winston Churchill is a war criminal because of the bombing campaign against Germany during WWII. I guess the paper "forgot" about the Spanish Civil War, Poland, Rotterdam, the Blitz, and the V-weapons.

For those of us who've studied military history, it's hard to imagine the situation at the start of the war. Both sides believed in daylight precision bombardment. Both sides tried to honor prewar agreements to only attack military targets. When the British tried daylight bombardment, their pitiful bombers of the day were wiped out. As a result, they switched to much less accurate night bombing. Even then, they tried to only attack military targets. Bombers were the only means for attacking German targets for several years.

During the Battle of Britain, a freak accident resulted in a Luftwaffe bomber releasing a handful of bombs over London (they were lost because their navigation system was being jammed by the British). The RAF countered by bombing Berlin. Hitler went nuts and ordered the full scale terror bombing of British cities that came to be known as "The Blitz". This bombing campaign went on for months and caused some 40,000 civilian casualties. It also saved the RAF because it was on the brink of collapse.

Germany started the bombing campaign against British cities. The Allies finished it. War is a brutal thing. It's best not to start one unless you're able to win it.
