WorldCom, which filed for the world's biggest bankruptcy in July, has said its accounting problems will exceed $9 billion. It aims to emerge intact from bankruptcy in mid-2003.
NEW YORK -- Reuters
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Wednesday it was "premature" to discuss what, if any, role he would personally assume at bankrupt telephone and data services company WorldCom.
Giuliani's comments came after his consulting firm, Giuliani Partners, said this week it is working with a key WorldCom bondholder, David Matlin, who leads a group that has spent more than $300 million to buy more than 10% of WorldCom debt.
When asked whether he had been approached about becoming chairman of WorldCom, Giuliani said: "That's really way premature. The idea of who would be the chairman at some point in the distant future ... is not something anybody can answer right now."
"They way this has been posited in some of the articles is that it's about ... me personally. This is really more about my firm," he said at a press conference in Manhattan referring to the role his firm will play in probing and preventing horse-betting scandals.
