I think it's instructive that in America, which is largely Christian, any number of wisecracks and outright bad taste can be directed at the figure of Jesus Christ (never mind God) without Christians rising up and rioting and killing. Jeez, when I was in college National Lampoon alone must have run some ghastly Jesus gag every other issue. Old timers like me may remember "Jessica Christ," or Foolbert Sturgeon's (Frank Stack's) "New Adventures of Jesus" which occupies a cherished spot in my underground comix collection. The comic where he joins a university faculty is priceless, as is the one where he is drafted into the army.
Frank, who somehow avoided being "necklaced" by crazed Christians in "intolerant" America, is currently a professor at the University of Missouri.
