If Mohammed had picked a wife from the beauty contestants, it probably would not have been just because of her looks. Mohammed married nineteen women, and all of them except the first were to cement an alliance with some family or tribe, a tradition of kings and leaders throughout history and across the planet. Mohammed married a 9-year old not because he was some kind of perv (as some have tried to imply), but because he needed the political alliance with her people.
