I have a lot of respect for Hitchen's opinions. He has shown himself to be someone who prides themselves on independent thinking, when it would be easiest to go along with the pack. Hitchens bailed from "The Nation" when the leftist lockstep anti-American thinking there got to be too much. He currently irritates liberals and conservatives in about equal amounts.

Regardless of the truth of his statements on Kissinger, the choice seems politically stupid. Surely it would have been possible to find someone of the required skills that didn't have Kissinger's baggage and also didn't have a political axe to grind? Wait...maybe not.
