Beyond the headlines

From the headlines, you'd think we're the most hated people on the planet. If you actually look at the poll results, you get a somewhat different picture. While I have not had a chance to read the entire poll, I did skim it from here. The full poll results can be downloaded from that page in a PDF file.

What's interesting is to see how strong US support remains in much of the world. For example, the percentage holding a favorable opinion of the US in 2002 shows:

West Europe
Germany 61%
Great Britain 75%
Italy 70%
France 63% (up 1% from 1999)

East Europe
Slovak Republic 60%
Poland 79%
Czech Republic 71%
Bulgaria 72%
Ukraine 80% (up 10% from 1999)
Russia 61% (up 24%)

Conflict Area
Turkey 30%
Pakistan 10%
Uzbekistan 85%

Americas
Argentina 34%
Bolivia 57%
Peru 67%
Honduras 80%
Venezuela 82%
Brazil 52%
Mexico 64%
Canada 72%
Guatamala 82%

Asia
Indonesia 61%
South Korea 53%
Japan 72%

Africa
Kenya 80%
Nigeria 77%

Now, I wonder how a similar poll in America would report our opinion of other countries like Belgium and Germany. I know my opinion of most European countries has dropped considerably in the past year.
