Hi Ed,
Here's some interesting reading:
Creating an Issue
This sweet letter comes from Vista, CA
Ironically Lott was born in 1941. He was seven years old when Thurmond ran against Truman and Dewey. He did not turn 18 until 1959 - long after Thurmond was in Congress. In fact, Lott contributed nothing to Thurmond's career, may never have even voted for him!
Lott first served in the House in 1972 - at which time Strom was trailblazing diversity efforts by hiring blacks at his office, as his aides, etc. So in all fairness, Lott never heard or knew the racist Strom who put on the 24 hour pro-segregation speech in 1957 but has always known the "pro-diversity" Strom, who holds conservative southern values.
How much does Lott really know about the "Dixiecrat" party? When you're seven you're oblivious to politics. He probably started paying attention after integration had already happened when he was 18.
I can't defend his remarks...but they all hinge upon what exactly he meant by his remark about "all these problems"
If "all these problems" are the racial tensions, well - his career is burnt like toast on the altar of racial equivalence.
If he meant "all these problems" were the one's engineered by Truman in his failure to realize and react to the threat of global communist expansion after the war - then he need simply clarify further and regret that he was not more clear.
Yes Truman moved civil rights forward - but failed miserably in the national security department. When the eastern bloc countries fell...Truman watched and did nothing! That alone was one of the worst Presidential mistakes in history. After all at this point we still were the only one's with the bomb! He practically Stalin to take eastern europe! It was a disgrace! His chickening out of Korea when MacArthur wanted permission to sweep em back, and then pulling MacArthur from his command after MacArthur publicly disagreed with Truman's terrible running of the war, made some folks want MacArthur to run for President in 1952!
Now look at this North Korean mess! Perhaps THAT is what Strom was thinking about when he uttered those lines.
Reading words and beliefs into someone's unarticulated position is a very dangerous thing to do.
I will await further comments and clarifications and reserve judgment until after all the dust settles.
It's fun wathcing every leftist, communist, socialist, green and other party go for the jugular on such circumstantial rhetoric. But they are desperate and that is their nature.
We'll see how it plays out.
