I mentioned Kerry partially because he's the only one I'm familiar with among those warming up to run. What McFly asks - if there are any Democrats who stand a chance of defeating an incumbent president in this so-called wartime - remains to be seen. What I can fathom from the country's unraveling politics and culture is: the coming crisis (and it is coming) can only be mitigated, not avoided. We need to find leaders, people with more than just money and good speechwriters. They need brains, and metaphorical 'balls' *, too, and lots of friends and advisors with the same qualities.

After the unemployment numbers came out a couple of weeks ago, pretty much simultaneously with the 'resignations' from George II's economic advisors, I was tempted to post something on the lines of "It's STILL the economy, stupid!" That's how George I lost, in spite of Desert Storm. It could happen again. It could also get a lot worse...
