Realistically, Romney can't be blamed for something that happened 50 years ago when he was just a teenager. Besides, we all know how those Little Lord Fauntleroy snob schools have a tendency to bring out the worst in the privileged little snits that go there.
But you're right, a man who actually had risen above all that could use it now as an opportunity to publicly regret his youthful behavior, and tie it in with a prominent contemporary social issue. He could have turned the incident into a positive statement that would have benefitted him politically and helped everyone.
Instead of being remembered as the man who originally hired Mr Grenell in the first place, he will now be thought of as the preppie who developed his leadership skills leading a gang of vigilante gay-bashing punks.
And you're right, the reason this is happening is his craven reluctance to offend his bigoted pals in the extremist evangelical movement, who might be offended at the slightest display of compassion, decency and honest contrition on his part.
And THAT did not happen 50 years ago when he was a pampered and spoiled rich brat. It happened yesterday.
