Every "risk" you list can be accomplished as easily now as before. It's not like the Washington Post can somehow protect a public source from "destroyed reputation, lawsuits, loss of business, shunning by associates."
Those of us who still apply critical thought to these things might notice that throughout Romney's entire political career, including previous senate, gubernatorial, and presidential runs, this never came up before. An incident we are now told was a formative event in these witnesses' lives.
Not from Democratic opposition researchers, not from Republican ones.
Where was Maxwell all those years? It's not like it's hard to contact a major newspaper if that's all you believe it takes to "protect" yourself.
Occam's Razor is starting to draw a little blood here.
