This is certainly something that has to be watched carefully, but I would be a lot more impressed if I didn't know the motivation of the press was not freedom and the rights of the people, but the desperate desire to dig up some dirt--ANY dirt--on George W. Bush.
You see, Bush is going to be working on his domestic agenda soon, and the Democrats and their media buttmonkeys have to throw him into some kind of train wreck to prevent that. Up until now, they have had no luck at all. Remember how easily they dug up things to aid in the evisceration of Trent Lott? Within days every media outlet had its own special story to show Lott as the Klansman they know every Republican actually is. You don't think they haven't been beating the archives to death for three years trying to find the Golden Scandal on Bush? They've pulled a few things out, but none have stuck.
The "secret papers" are their last hope. Even if nothing is in them, they can push tax cuts off the front page for weeks just poring through them in public.
What's really a hoot is hearing liberals piping up with "If he's got nothing to hide, why worry about his privacy?" argument, which they have lambasted unmercifully when cops or the FBI came up with it.
