Democracies need information, cannot exist in an atmosphere of secrecy. That's why there is "freedom of the press", franking privileges, "free speech", et al.
When a government decides that how it formulates, for instance, energy policy is no business of the people affected, it is acting in the best traditions of Stalin.
When the privately owned media is subject to manipulation as the Israelis can do to the American press, then views become skewed, and democracy isn't working.
When the government holds citizens indefinitely with no right of counsel, no right to trial, it drives another nail in the coffin of that democracy. Hitler did that, exactly that. It doesn't have to hold more than one for democracy to have failed. That's a hole drilled in the bottom of the democratic ship.
And a lot of good people have died to preserve what is being taken by the appointed government.
Sad.
Remnants should last as long as I do, and history is written by the victors, so it will, by definition, turn out all right.
And it won't be democracy.
OR, by some miracle, people will be counted rather than money.
