<If ANY of you conservatives over here can't SEE that this author is fundamentally right, then I dare you to challenge anything this fellow says as WRONG.
Much as I like to pretty much ignore Morford's shrieking rants, I guess I'll pick this one up.
I hope he IS fundamentally right, that the war turns out to be a cakewalk for our guys, that Saddam's military is a tiny, quivering fraction of its former self, and that we do end up with zero American casualties. As an American, I like this, which may seem odd to a few other Americans, but there it is.
Now, as far where he is, well, "in error:"
You cannot have a war when the so-called enemy has done nothing to provoke you and is absolutely no threat to your national safety and has no significant military force and has negligible chance of even setting off a firecracker near your own overwhelming death machines, and whose only weapons of minimal destruction are the rusty short-range warheads and biochemical agents we sold him 20 years ago, and kept selling to him, even after we knew he was gassing his own people.
Clinton used deadly force on a number of nations that were no conceivable threat to America. Odd that he didn't get nearly this much crap from the Left back then for this. Well, be that as it may.
Even discounting the possibility of Saddam supporting and arming terrorists who can and will set off more than firecrackers in America and its foreign interests, it is being overlooked that America has other interests and allies in the Mideast region, all of which Saddam has placed on his personal shitlist. Maybe a liberal could care less if Tel Aviv is nuked, but many Americans do.
When we finally take Saddam out, and finally show the world exactly what was going on, and what he was doing, and what he was planning, will any of these leftist gasbrains come out and say, "hey, whaddya know. I was totally full of shit."
Nah. Nobody can rewrite history in their own minds like a leftist. Simply pretending that the ghastly history of communism doesn't exist requires a reality shunt in the leftist mind that properly harnessed could probably shift the entire solar system into a parallel dimension. Pretending that the history of Iraq doesn't exist is a piece of cake by comparison. Nevertheless, for the rest of the studio audience, I will remind everyone that the U.N. and nuclear authorities gave Saddam a clean bill of health just before the Gulf War, and after the war stripped the bullshit away, these same authorities were astonished at finding a full bore nuclear weapons research program, which they carefully dismantled. Then they went away, and left Saddam completely alone for almost half a decade. So now we are supposed to believe the clean bill of health again?
Remember Afghanistan? Yes, we're still there, warring away. Bombing and attacking and killing. Haven't caught a single al Qaeda leader of note yet. That looks bad for Dubya. Killed a few thousand civilians though. Shrug.
We are not "warring away." Not anymore. We destroyed many terrorists and a number of leaders, and obliterated their Afghanistan infrastructure. Not bad, all things considered.
Depending on who you ask, somewhere under 4,000 Afghan civilians in all died of military actions between the start of the American effort and March of 2002. While this is not insignificant, especially to those involved, in the annals of major military campaigns it is a goddam miracle. I have found no significant casualties since then, with some outstanding exceptions like the bombing of the "wedding party" in July, which killed about 50 people according to the U.N. The fact that nothing else of this nature has made major headlines in the world news since then should tell you something.
What we are currently engaged in is rebuilding Afghanistan, a fact which does not fit neatly into the author's loathing of Bush and America. Suggest you browse this site for a while. Take your time.
