Another factor not mentioned here is that if your income is above a certain level, many Schedule A deductions disappear. Many deductions require that the deduction exceed a certain percentage of your income before it takes effect. These include medical, employee expenses, education expenses, and others. I haven't been able to deduct a medical expense in years.
