Cracking water is easy. It just take electricity. But if you burn petroleum products to make the electricity to crack the water into its atoms, then you are defeating the whole purpose. Using some kind of alternate, non-polluting energy source seems like the best bet.
I prefer breaking water down to get hydrogen, then using other sources. For one thing, breaking water down does not cause pollution. For another, the last thing Earth needs with our rising sea levels is creating more water. (By the way, gasoline combustion engines not only produce CO2, they produce water as well.) Of course, it would take centuries of creating water to raise the sea level a noticeable amount. I would rather see humans lower the sea level. Imagine having more land.
Anyway, by cracking water into hydrogen and oxygen, and then burning hydrogen to make water, we keep the Earth’s water in balance.
