While tens of millions of concerned citizens took to the streets in cities around the globe over the weekend to protest the looming war on Iraq, in what some are calling the largest demonstrations ever, one would have to search far and wide, high and low, to find a pro-war rally that attracted more than a handful of pro-war activists.
No, it seems those agitating for war prefer to hide behind the anonymity of the internet where they can regurgitate the latest bilge from Rush and his rabid cohorts on the talk-show circuit.
Need I offer an example?
Some of you may have managed a wry smile, as I did, when I read monday morning of Pres. Bush's curt dismissal of the worldwide protests, especially those here in the United States.
In other words, it doesn't matter what the People want, we're going to do what we want. The "we" in this case being a small circle of Chickenhawks surrounding the Chief Exec, who, along with their supporters on the internet, appear to be the only ones who really want this war.
I couldn't help recalling then-Pres. Richard M. Nixon's similar remarks about anti-war protests over three decades ago. I also couldn't help remembering that he ended up eating his words, especially after the Veteran's March on DC, when the ex-GIs gathered in the Capitol and sang, "Bring our brothers home, now, bring our brothers home."
Speaking of old songs, I think the titular question of a famous folk hit from the 60s has finally been answered:
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing...
Gone to protests, every one.
