Personally, I don't doubt he fibbed about his African creds because he felt it added to his literary prestige. I just don't think its that big a deal. Now the Right is accusing Obama of actually being born in Hawaii.
I don't doubt the only reason he hung out with Rev Wright is because it gave him a good vote base in the African community. I don't really believe he is a formal, doctrinaire Christian. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised he was actually an atheist.
