Some in the media are sounding like it's Tet Part II with their gloom and doom assessments. I guess having so many 24 hour news channels means they have a lot of air time to fill. They try to spin every embedded reporter's account of a firefight into the second coming of Omaha Beach. They bring on their "military experts" to pontificate on what people are seeing on their screens. And most don't know what the hell they're talking about.
Warfare is the most dangerous and unpredictable of human endevours. It's always full of surprises, and most of them are bad.
Still, in less than a week, our forces have moved to within 100 miles of Baghdad and won control over about half of the country. They've prevented the wholesale destruction of the oil wells like Saddam did in Kuwait back in 1991. They've hit a lot of targets and killed very few innocent civilians (fewer than our own KIAs). About 2000 or so Iraqis are now POWs and many more have abandoned their equipment. Attacks have started on the dug in Republican Guard divisions, and the attacks will increase as they move. You can't fight for long when you're hiding in the sand. Sooner or later, you have to mass your forces to attack - and then you can be killed.
The war isn't over by a long shot, but it isn't lost, either.
