The media has been looking desperately for something to hang on Bush in this war, and the idea that the war didn't end in five minutes is now one of their main talking points.
How many times does a reporter have to ask the question: "Did you expect it to be this hard?"
After September 11, it took a while for them to get their nerve up to start attacking the administration again. They recovered faster this time.
You will note that not much has been seen of Saddam Hussein since that first attack, and certainly nothing that proves he's still active, or even alive.
It is possible that they may have underestimated the willingness of the herds of thugs that formed Saddam's goon squads to continue fighting, even in absence of Saddam. I'm sure they're thinking about the thousands of Iraqis they have killed and tortured, and have a pretty good idea what would happen to them if they lost this war.
