You're just a pawn in all of that. As am I. You aren't responsible for what the folks with a huge interest in what happens and fund the smears do.
They are clever enough to make them sound good, and that's enough for most people. The folks with the power count on that, and it works.
It takes a look behind the scenes for one. And it takes priorities which include the welfare of others to be able to figure out what is going on. Without those it's easy to go for what sounds good.
