That DJ has no powers of censorship on that station whatsoever.
If the problem had really been one of failing to follow format...which, by the way, the GM contradicts himself by saying "He was fired basically over philosophical differences,"...it would have taken absolutely NO effort to get a board operator to simply flip his mic off during the time period that the station's format called for.
