Re: After-the-fact referendum in Iraq?

When the Iraqis get used to the idea of not being shot for an opinion, I dare say that we will be hearing a LOT of opinions, and they will fall all over the spectrum, just like they do for other free people.

I would also be interested in the results of such a poll, and have no doubt plenty of pollsters will be asking such questions in the future.

I would also like to see the results broken down in terms of those who have lost loved ones in this war, and those who have not. Will someone who lost a relative to the war still think it is worth it? Right away? A year from now? Five years? Ever?

We hear a lot about "civilian" deaths, but there are also a lot of conscripted soldiers being killed. The ones who aren't Saddam's picked few fanatics, but men who are on the lines because they had no choice. Their deaths count too.

And it will be a long time before we know which Iraqi deaths were "civilian" and which "military." If ever. The lines are seriously blurred. Soldiers are fighting in civilian garb. Civilians may be picking up arms and fighting. Soldiers who show up at hospitals in civilian garb aren't about to say they are anything but civilians.
