The problem Saddam faced (both wars)...

...is that our air power can decimate any land force that he let us see. If he wanted to use his Guards at all, he needed to keep them in the cities, amid big buildings, under heavy camo, hull down, parked in stores & shooting through the windows, etc.

Trying to hold any kind of line against our forces was suicide. Any time he tried to maneuver, we clobbered him.

He also failed to build a credible air defense. He had air defenses at one time, but he wasted them by taking pot shots at our no-fly-zone patrols over the years, and eating the retaliations. If he had any brains, he would have hoarded air defense and built and bought as much as he could lay his hands on. Then concentrated it in the spots where his land forces would be attacked by air.

Other thing he did wrong was doing a piss-poor job of training and equiping guerillas. The convoys have been incredibly juicy targets that have been left, effectively, alone.

Blowing the bridges would have delayed things some days. But unless he had some good use to make of those days (like some well-done guerilla activity, or shooting down 6-8 of our planes per day), they would have had little effect.

Bottom line is that he was incompetent (for which I am grateful). But it didn't matter much - no matter what he did, he would have lost big.
