Re: Reality Check

Mark,

I think it works both ways. Its easy to get euphoric over video footage of elated Iraqis dancing in the streets and ripping down statues. Its just as easy to get pessimistic over bad news about suicide bombers and slain clerics.

This is going to take more time, more money and more lives than we think. It could very well devolve into a terrible muddle not unlike what we have witnessed in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Hopefully, that won't be the case.

Iraq is a nation of over 22 million people. Not all of them are out welcoming us as our tanks drive by. Some remain indoors plotting the next suicide bomb. If Mr. Bush is unable to contain and subdue these attacks, the American public's taste for Iraq's liberation will sour. And, if chemical and biological weapons are never found, the public will begin wonder why we ever chose to set foot there.

For the moment, its much too early to cast judgement on the progress of the war and the prospects for Iraq's future. One hopes and prays that Mr. Bush's gamble will achieve its intended objectives. The swiftnest and effectiveness of our troops is something to regard with pride. Indeed, this war was effectively over well before it began. I just hope we are truly prepared for what happens next.

Donald
