Re: P.S. Andrew Sullivan's comments

I have a confession: I have at times, as the war has unfolded, secretly wished for things to go wrong. Wished for the Iraqis to be more nationalistic, to resist longer. Wished for the Arab world to rise up in rage. Wished for all the things we feared would happen. I'm not alone: A number of serious, intelligent, morally sensitive people who oppose the war have told me they have had identical feelings.
Some of this is merely the result of pettiness -- ignoble resentment, partisan hackdom, the desire to be proved right and to prove the likes of Rumsfeld wrong, irritation with the sanitizing, myth-making American media. That part of it I feel guilty about, and disavow. But some of it is something trickier: It's a kind of moral bet-hedging, based on a pessimism not easy to discount, in which one's head and one's heart are at odds.

Sullivan lauds his honesty - but is there not a liberal in the whole planet who was not thinking the EXACT same thing?

Half the posts from the left archived here are mute testimony to rabid desire to see Bush and Rumsfeld with egg on their face.

The whole thing about leftists is not about their true humanity - but rather it's all about guilt.

Most liberals inherently have huge inferiority complexes and guilt issues.* Until they get over these hurdles, they view all eyes as condemning, damning and accusatory.

Whether they be criminals, drug-users, sexually promiscuous or diversified, something inside them makes them fear anyone preaching ANY sort of morality.
They fear condemnation and literal or social prosecution.

In essence FEAR is at the heart of liberal politics.

The liberal politicians know this and so pander to their fears. Conservatives will invade your bedroom! Conservatives will take your dope and tear out your MJ garden! Conservatives will make you feel bad about yourself!

The liberal vote is really a vote to alleviate guilt. A vote to create a society where they feel they will NOT be judged by others, no matter what they do. Naturally this is just a continuation of the delusions.

Sure they can couch it into sweet sounding humanity, welfare and common good issues but that is all smoke. The bottom line is that these folks will do anything to diminish their fears and guilt.

The saddest thing is that only they have the power to do this for themselves. A lawless society of anything goes still would not comfort them. There would always be dirty looks from some folks, condemning preachers in churches, etc.

Eventually, they would seek to destroy all the churches and the ones giving the dirty looks. Yes, guilt, often bears a tree of evil fruit.

They fail to see that guilt and fear is internally generated and the only person who can alleviate one's guilt - is oneself.

Targeting conservatives, abortion protesters, preachers or the religious right is comforting but ultimately futile because they still do not find the relief they seek.

Few are brave enough to really answer their own nagging self-doubts or the sources of their guilt complexes and so as we see here in the case of ther Salon editor, and many just like him, in an effort to comfort themselves they can contort their belief system so that it actually wishes harm on others.

Someday they will learn that no matter what they do - it is only they themselves who can control their happiness or sadness. Bush failing or Rumsfeld failing will not make their guilt go away. Banishing all conservatives from any office would not accomplish it either - simply because they can't banish their inner voice, no matter how hard they may try.
