Re: Investor from the future

I'm not going to give you a hard time. I once printed up a technical breakthrough in my space newletter that turned out to be some tech magazine's April Fool's joke.

Weekly World News, as others have said, is a super bizarre tabloid. If you read an article about Bigfoot being the son of Elvis found on Noah's Ark, it would be here. Great fun at the checkout stand though, and worth it just for the adventures of Bat Boy!

That being said, the problem I have with the time traveler theory on the face of it is that he made millions in two weeks. It ain't logical.

Supposedly, he is from almost 300 years in the future. Unless he had a stack of research files with him, how the hell would he know which stocks to invest in that would go up that much in a particular two week time? Any idiot time traveler could make loads of money in investments over about ten years using future knowledge (buy Microsoft, etc.) but the market is so volatile that unless he had a stack of future Wall Street Journals (would they still be on paper?) he couldn't do it.

Anyway, unless the future is a real hellhole, why come back to our primitive time to be rich? Heck, why didn't he go back about ten years and make a shitload of future money in whatever passes for their stock market?

I spent some time figuring out how I could rule the world if I went back in time about 200 or more years. Not as easy as it sounds. Getting yourself involved in critical political turning points is often a dangerous, sometimes fatal practice. And practically every invention you could think of is impossible to build with old technology, and admit it, you know less about how things work than you think you do.

Hah! We will impress the primitive people! We just invent the match! It's a wooden stick with...some...stuff on it...okay, how about the internal combustion engine? Oh, I have to build one? Crap.

I've often thought that if I went back in time I could make a fortune inventing something simple yet popular, like ice cream. I know how to make an ice cream machine. Other simple items suggest themselves, like the paper clip. If you went back far enough, gunpowder would be a winner. Oh, wait. Do you know what saltpeter looks like? Crap again.

Anyway, who the hell wants to live 200 years ago? Yech.
