The weapons were the airplanes and they killed 3000 people. They were chosen because they wanted to escalate the number of deaths in their attacks. WMD would escalate the total even more. To claim they are not interested in WMD despite their trend towards more massive attacks and other evidence to contrary is burying your head in the sand.
