Be sure to see all of the slides. The pilot's callsign is "KC", which stands for "Killer Chick." It can now be revealed that her name is Captain Kimberly Reed, USAFA Class of '97.

A recent issue of Aviation Week (I think it was the April 28 issue, the one with Rutan's spacecraft on the cover) had the story on this incident. She was flying over Baghdad when she was hit, perhaps by a missile but she wasn't sure. It took out both of the plane's hydraulic systems and the plane went out of control. She cooly activated the manual flight control system, regained control, and took the plane back to base for a safe landing. She was flying again the next day. KC, indeed!
