You know, we should draw a distinction here. It is illegal to spy against the United States, for a foreign power. It is legal to believe and talk about almost any darn thing you want to. It is legal to be a communist. It is ok to go to meetings and read books. That's something that you and McCarthy don't/didn't seem to understand.
