Spending

A common gimmick (not confined to any one political philosophy) is to say "The money spent on [insert spending program you don't like] could have been spent on [insert program you DO like]." In my line of work, one or the other of these is usually the space program.

So by that logic, the cost of GWII could have put 700,000 American kids through Harvard...

The assumption, of course, is that the money spent on the Iraq war was "wasted money," which is a separate discussion, so we'll just leave it at that.

It's not like we're not spending anything on educating American kids now.

The United States (Federal, state and local funding combined) spends on the order of $700 billion a year on educating our kids. I assume a chunk of that is putting a lot of kids through college. The Federal Pell Grant program alone helps put about 5 million kids through college each year. Granted, it isn't usually Harvard, but there it is.

Whether this money is well-spent or not is another argument:

What's wrong with this picture? Note funding is in constant dollars.

...Or saved and improved the lives of 10,000,000 children around the world for 10 years.

We improved the lives of 20 million Iraqis for the foreseeable future, although the left is doing its damnedest to make it look like Iraq was better off under Saddam.
