<People who opposed the attack on Iraq never had any doubt that the United States -- the world's lone military superpower -- would roll over a pitiful Third World country. That wasn't the point.
Instead, it was a question of why should the U.S. military kill thousands of innocent Iraqis, maim thousands more and ruin their country to take out one man. All of that, for questionable U.S. motives.
...We dropped tons of bombs on Iraq but many of the victims were civilians. The much-touted Iraqi Republican Guard disappeared without putting up much of a fight. The U.S. military's invasion force romped in what has been likened to an elephant stomping on a gnat.
For the record, current Iraqi civilian deaths range from 1,252 to a maximum of 4,771 depending on the source of the numbers, and the assumptions made.
The official story now...and the liberals are sticking to it...was that "everybody knew" the war would be a cakewalk.
Bullcrap. While nobody ever thought we would lose in the end, the Left was loudly predicting thousands of American dead, hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis, flaming oil wells, Israel at war, terrorism in America, Arabs attacking from all corners, a years-long quagmire, another "Vietnam," and pretty much every dire consequence you could think of.
They were dead wrong on almost every last one.
