Identity crisis in Europe

Much more so than Americans, Europeans are trying to understand who they are and what nationalistic or pan-European identities to adopt.

It's admirable to see many in Europe rush to the defense of the best, liberal Western values and achievements in the face of a growing threat from radical Islam, but I wish the Right would assume such a defense in a more enlightened manner at times. The Right's response to the threat to Europe's liberty, gender equality, progressive social values, etc. posed by totalitarian Islam - the true #1 fascists on this planet - is unfortunately
accompanied at times by racist or xenophobic attacks on perfectly innocent people.

I have to admit a fair amount of admiration of the slain Dutch leader Pim Fortuyn. He managed to build a very diverse (as opposed to "multicultural") coalition of supporters united in their defense of social and economic liberty against the harmful influence of that certain type of immigration that neither aspires to assimilate, nor share in liberal Western values.
