Democrats are reeling from polls showing Bush annihilating any and all opponents in next year’s election – including that recent one showing Bush over Bill Clinton by an amazing 21 points in a hypothetical match-up. Heck, the three strongest Democrats – Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore – aren’t even running. Most serious Democrats are already looking forward to 2008.
Why? In a word, security. Americans are still profoundly affected by the events of Sep. 11, there’s a very widespread belief that Bush is a strong leader in what is just the beginning of a long period of crisis, and the nation is in no mood at all to change leaders now, in these extraordinary times. It ain’t gonna happen.
