Fox,
I have been reading James Dunnigan since I picked up a copy of "How To Make War" at my local library in about 1992. I was 16 at the time and read it cover to cover. Its a nonfiction book, that basically describes all of the world's militaries (at the time of printing of course), as well as strategies and tactics of same countries. I have another of his books: Digital Soldier on my book shelf, and have been reading at the Strategy Page for a couple of years now when I can find the time. James Dunnigan impresses me as a man who does a hell of a lot of research and writes some very good books on the subject. I haven't read his latest books, but if i see them at my library, I'll probably check them out.
I'd be interested in more opinions of this author from those who have actually read his work.
-Steve G. (also never seen combat, nor been in the military, but I do like to wargame too.)

don't judge an author merely by his critics
