If you stick to rods and reels and such the fish have a chance. Once you let the rest of your brain give you the edge the fish have no chance.
My favorite fishing methods:
A) Two speed boats with a large weighted net drawn between them.*
(fishing's done in 15 minutes)
B) Mining Dynamite with a underwater fuse.*
(fishing's done in two minutes)
(As you can tell I've never been patient or much of a sportsman or fisherman)
If I were to go on Safari, It would've been in the fifties when the "car safaris" were still in vogue and one could kill enough game in a day to fill one's trophy wall for a lifetime.
Growing up in a beach town there were regulars one knew who were fixtures on the pier and the bridges. Each swore by a type of lure and had thousands invested in rods, reels, lures and such. I never got it. I've got a great uncle who practically lived on the sea and fishing is his entire life and knows all the sweet spots for fishing off of Baja. The Hemingway-esque lure of man versus nature never appealed to me if one had to limit oneself. Sure there were great fish stories, Huge Marlin carcasses stuffed and pinned up on walls and all enough old brass nautical gear one could desire if one had the heart of an old salt or a blistering barnacle. By my environs I should've ended up loving to go fishing. Maybe it was overkill. Maybe it was a case of ignoring your immediate surroundings and longing for other places.
Whatever the reason... it just never connected for me.
For outsmarting pea-brained animals one simply has to know their weak spots.
Snails: One low dish of budweiser (or Heineken for the imported snails) Hic!
Flies: Wave one hand quickly at a distance and while their multi-faceted eyes focus on high frequencies (which is why they are drawn to light) approach slowly with a newspaper in the other and bam - lights out.
Coons: Bungee cord your trash barrel lids shut.
Fish: Well the above mentioned techniques are pretty flawless. I'll admit I've always wanted to try the Gyro Gearloose method of using a lined live Remora to land the deeper sea fish.
