60 years ago (roughly), at 5am , my grandparents (father side) were woken up by the doorbell ring. German soldiers were demanding to get in. My grandpa demanded a Belgian police while asking my uncle to burn all the false ID cards they had stored for the resistance network and my grandma arranged for my father to look sick, in the bed.
When my grandfather had to let them in, my grandmother shouted "Krank, krank (sick) showing my father who supposedly had scarlet fever. The soldiers left him alone but took my grandfather and uncle away (they said to my grandmother: it's the last time you see him alive).
A few days later, my uncle's girlfriend (now my aunt) had the guts to go to the prison, convinced (in german which she knows) the German officer that he was innocent and he was set free. My grandfather was also released early.
This was the most frightening moment of the occupation.
Several months ago, I remember seeing an embedded journalist report about US soldiers barging in a house, shouting to get the entire family outside, with children scared to death, shaking and wheeping.
I felt a strong empathy towards the Iraqi family and especially the children..
Will that last 5 years? 5 years of occupation.......:(:-<
